Missouri Health Connection
Lake Regional Health System is a member of the Missouri Health Connection (MHC) network. This nonprofit, health information network enables doctors, hospitals and labs across the state to coordinate patient care through sharing health information.
There are many ways the MHC network improves patient care. It is a secure, electronic network that helps doctors, hospitals, labs and other healthcare organizations share patient records quickly. With a more complete medical history, they can provide you with the best quality of care.
The network is particularly helpful in emergencies when patients often cannot share important health information. MHC enables doctors to access patient health records immediately, which can save lives. In addition, MHC allows primary care physicians to receive alerts about important events, such as when their patients are admitted to a hospital. By sharing records, doctors can see important diagnoses and allergies, reduce redundant medical tests and avoid prescribing medicines that do not work well together.
Security and Privacy
MHC complies with all state and federal privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). All doctors and health care organizations that participate with MHC are responsible for following all privacy laws when sharing health records with the network. Only authorized health care providers and organizations involved in your treatment can access your health information. Records will not have to be faxed or mailed, so they cannot get lost or go to the wrong place, and unlike paper files, electronic records will be safe if there is a fire, flood or tornado.
Here are a few more ways in which the MHC electronic network provides more privacy and security than traditional paper records:
- MHC maintains records of the authorized doctors and caregivers who view your information.
- You may request a report of who has seen your records from your provider.
- Authorized providers need a secure password to use the network.
- MHC is able to audit and track all access and changes to your health information.
- The secure network keeps your records safer than faxing or mailing.
- Your records won’t be sent to the wrong place, get lost or set on a fax machine in view of others.
- Unlike paper files, electronic records will be safe if there is a fire, flood or tornado.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule provides you with health information privacy rights. These include the right to:
- See your health information
- Know who has viewed your health information
- Correct or change your health information
You can use these rights, ask questions about them, and file a complaint if you think they are being denied or your health information isn't being protected.
You have full control over your health records and you decide if you wish to share them with your health care team members through MHC. You can decline to be part of MHC by opting out via the organization’s website. Should you change your mind after opting out and decide you would like to allow your health care team to have access and share your health records, you can opt in through the same site.
