Lake Regional Wound Healing Center has been named a Center of Distinction by Healogics, the nation's largest provider of advanced wound care services. The Wound Healing Center achieved outstanding patient outcomes for the past 12 months, including patient satisfaction of 92 percent, wound healing rate of 97 percent and a median of 30 days to heal.
"We're proud of our staff for their dedication to exceptional patient care," said Laurie Lowther, R.N., Lake Regional's Wound Healing Center director. "We are able to heal chronic wounds of patients who might otherwise experience an amputation or other life-threatening condition. This award highlights our high rate of success."
Patients come to Lake Regional Wound Healing Center for highly specialized care for diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds that have not healed in a reasonable amount of time.
"The most rewarding part of the job is that a lot of patients with chronic wounds have given up hope that their wound will be healed," said Justin Shatto, M.D., Lake Regional general surgeon and medical director of the Wound Healing Center. "When we are able to heal them and have success, then we enjoy that with the patient."
One of the highly specialized treatments offered by Lake Regional Wound Healing Center is hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The hyperbaric oxygen chamber surrounds patients with 100-percent oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This painless therapy increases the amount of oxygen in the patient's blood and allows red blood cells to pass more easily into the wound, healing it from the inside out.
In addition to tissue oxygenation, Lake Regional Wound Healing Center also provides skin grafting, wound debridement, noninvasive vascular studies, specialty wound dressings and more treatments aimed at healing hard-to-heal wounds.
Lake Regional Health System provides comprehensive health care services to the residents and visitors of the lake area. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and is a three-time recipient of the Missouri Quality Award. Lake Regional also operates primary care, walk-in care, specialty care and rehab therapy clinics; retail pharmacies; and home health and hospice services throughout the lake area.
