Lake Regional Health System welcomes Pulmonologist Harjyot "Joe" Sohal, M.D., FCCP. Dr. Sohal will join Lake Regional full time beginning Aug. 1. He currently is helping provide coverage for pulmonary medicine patients in the region.
Dr. Sohal is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. He cares for adult patients with lung diseases and respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and more. His services include fiber optic bronchoscopy, interventional pulmonary medicine, lung cancer screening and pulmonary function tests.
"We welcome Dr. Sohal to our team," said Michael Burcham, vice president of Lake Regional Physician Practices. "We are committed to providing our patients with high-quality pulmonology care, and Dr. Sohal brings extensive knowledge and experience. We are pleased to have him."
Dr. Sohal has worked in mid-Missouri since 2006, including at the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital in Columbia and Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, as well as Lake Regional Health System's Intensive Care Unit. In addition, he is an associate professor of medicine in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Environmental Medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, as well as the associate program director for the Department of Internal Medicine Residency Program.
The opportunity to help people drew Dr. Sohal to medicine, and he strives to help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan.
"I explain the disease process to them and why we have chosen a treatment so they understand why it's important for them to do what we're asking them to do," he said.
Dr. Sohal earned his medical degree from J.J.M. Medical College in Karnataka, India. He completed a residency in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio, and a fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
In his free time, Dr. Sohal enjoys golfing and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Julia, have three children.
The medical staff at Lake Regional Health System includes more than 100 physicians and nurse practitioners who offer primary and specialty care for lake-area residents and visitors. For more information or to download a provider directory, visit www.lakeregional.com.
