Lake Regional Constructing New Women’s and Children’s Unit with Family Birth Center

Monday, January 8, 2018

Lake Regional Health System is pleased to announce that its new Family Birth Center, now under construction on the hospital's third floor, will be located inside an all-new Women's and Children's Unit.

"When it opens this spring, the Women's and Children's Unit will meet a longstanding need for the lake area," said Mary Lou Gamm, RNC-OB, nurse manager of Lake Regional Family Birth Center. "The doctors, nurses and support staff will focus exclusively on women's and children's health care, and patients will benefit from having a facility close-to-home, dedicated to their needs."

In addition to the new Family Birth Center, the Women's and Children's Unit will include a state-of-the-art obstetrical surgical suite, a post-anesthesia care unit and private overnight rooms. Services for women will include such procedures as hysterectomies and endometrial ablations.

The new unit also will welcome pediatric patients needing overnight care for such diagnoses as dehydration, RSV, asthma and appendicitis. The same nurses who care for the mothers and infants in the Family Birth Center will care for these pediatric patients.

"We have had a Level II nursery at Lake Regional for a few years now, and our Family Birth Center staff members have received extensive training on caring for infants requiring IV fluids, respiratory support, antibiotics and other advanced care, and they use those skills to keep more babies here, near their families," Gamm said. "With the new Women's and Children's Unit, we'll have this same staff caring for our older pediatric patients as well, in a facility designed for their comfort and the comfort of their families."
