Lake Regional Celebrates National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

Monday, April 19, 2021

During National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 18–24, Lake Regional Health System celebrates the invaluable contributions of laboratory professionals to patient care.

Lake Regional’s Laboratory Services team has more than 30 people whose work changed dramatically during the past year. The team has played a key role during the pandemic, processing more than 30,000 COVID-19 tests.

“The Laboratory team has always been instrumental in providing care behind the scenes,” said Paul Newman, M.T., manager of Laboratory Services at Lake Regional. “But I was completely amazed by our team’s tireless commitment to tackling this pandemic and supporting our entire health care system. We are proud to work together as a team focused on providing exceptional care.”

Lab Week’s theme, “Laboratory Professionals Get Results,” recognizes the pivotal role these professionals play in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

“Every day, nurses, physicians, and other health care workers depend on laboratory professionals to perform tests on blood and other body fluids, interpret the results, and help provide a complete picture of a patient’s health,” Newman said. “The CDC reports that 70% of today’s medical decisions depend on laboratory test results, which shows the important role laboratory professionals play.”

Using state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, laboratory professionals can detect the presence of cancer, monitor therapeutic drug levels, identify infectious viruses and bacteria, match blood compatibility for transfusions, and analyze the chemical content of blood and other body fluids. Without this precise and valuable information, medicine would be guesswork.

The Laboratory Services department touches all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care at the hospital and the clinics. Last year, the Lake Regional Laboratory team processed more than 900,000 tests.
