Lake Regional Celebrates American Pharmacists Month

Monday, October 18, 2021

Lake Regional Health System celebrates American Pharmacists Month in October to honor the invaluable services of its pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The celebration’s theme is “Pharmacy Workers Are Heroes.”

“Pharmacists often play a ‘behind-the-scenes’ role, but that doesn’t mean they don’t serve a vital function to our communities,” said Tony Kauten, PharmD, Lake Regional Director of Pharmacy. “Pharmacists help their communities with a variety of needs. In addition to preparing and dispersing medicines, pharmacists work to improve medication use and help patients manage chronic conditions.”

Pharmacists review medication lists to look for potentially dangerous drug interactions, and they look for duplications and for cheaper alternatives. Pharmacists also are responsible for patient education.

“At Lake Regional, our pharmacists take the time to listen to patient concerns by answering their questions and helping them overcome any challenges they may face in taking their prescriptions,” Kauten said. “Pharmacists are educators, patient advocates and medication experts who are committed to exceptional patient outcomes.”

Kauten understands that patients can sometimes feel overwhelmed when prescribed new medication, so he recommends asking your pharmacist the below questions to feel more confident:

  • What is the medication called, and what does it do?
  • What is the correct way to take this medication?
  • Will any of my other medications or supplements interfere with this medication?
  • What side effects are considered normal, and which ones should prompt me to seek medical attention?
  • What should I do if I forget to take this medication on time?

Lake Regional employs 21 pharmacists and 22 pharmacy techs in its inpatient and retail pharmacies.

Lake Regional Pharmacy provides flu shots, both regular and high-dose, at each of its five locations. The shingles vaccination is also available at all locations.

Lake Regional Pharmacy has five retail locations throughout the lake area: Camdenton, Eldon, Lake Ozark, Laurie and Osage Beach. Each location offers free prescription delivery to surrounding areas; online refills; Sync Your Refills; and phone and text reminders. Learn more at
