Lake Regional Cancer Center Welcomes Dr. Waheed Full Time

Tuesday, April 5, 2022

Lake Regional Health System is pleased to announce Shahid Waheed, M.D., FACP, a part-time member of the cancer care team, will join Lake Regional Cancer Center full time on May 9.

“Dr. Waheed is a knowledgeable, skilled and compassionate physician,” said TJ Sweet, Lake Regional Cancer Service Line director. “He has been part of our Cancer Center team for years, and we are grateful to welcome him now as a full-time physician. He has the expertise to design state-of-the-art personalized treatment plans, and the heart to make every patient feel valued and supported.”

Dr. Waheed, who is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, cares for patients with cancer, including those most commonly treated at Lake Regional: colorectal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and lymphoma. Dr. Waheed always takes time to listen to his patients’ goals and to explain their treatment options.

“Trust is important,” Dr. Waheed said. “We have to develop a trust in patients that we will take care of them.”

The opportunity to help advance cancer care drew Dr. Waheed to oncology.

“When I was choosing a subspecialty, I read an article that said out of 120 new drugs in development, 99 were in the field of oncology,” he said. “Oncology is the frontier of medicine.”

Along with caring for patients, Dr. Waheed has worked on bone marrow research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. He also has performed stem cell transplants and worked on genetic and molecular research involved in treating cancer with immunotherapies and targeted drugs.

“Oncology is not only a profession but a passion of mine,” Dr. Waheed said. “I am passionate about providing hope.”

Dr. Waheed joins medical oncology provider Carla Ostronic, MPAS, PA-C, and radiation oncologists Mark Bryer, M.D.; Reed Cope, M.D.; and Andrew Leiker, M.D. To schedule an appointment, call Lake Regional Cancer Center at 573.302.2772.
