Lake Regional Brings Back Junior Volunteer Program, Students May Apply Now

Friday, March 25, 2022

Lake Regional Health System is accepting applications for the 2022 Junior Volunteer Program that begins in June. Civic-minded young people, ages 14 to 18, who are interested in making a difference in their community, are encouraged to apply.

“Volunteering is one of the best things you can do for your future,” said Betty Coleman, Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary’s Junior Volunteers coordinator. “Once you start, you realize the benefits are endless, and it’s something many people continue to do for the rest of their lives.”

Junior volunteers must be fully vaccinated and follow all COVID-19 guidelines for health care facilities, including wearing a mask at all times.

Junior volunteers assist staff with basic manual tasks on patient floors and in other hospital departments as assigned. Duties in each department vary but could include delivering mail, directing visitors or preparing food. Hours vary depending on the department. The Auxiliary office will work with each volunteer to schedule around work or school-related activities.

Upon completing 50 hours of service, junior volunteers will receive service pins and certificates recognizing their contribution. Also, deserving individuals may receive letters of recommendation to accompany their college applications.

“For students hoping to secure scholarships, it’s not enough to have good grades and test scores,” Coleman says. “You have to show that you have leadership skills, are responsible and care about something outside yourself. Volunteering is a great way to demonstrate these qualities on a resume or college application.”

Applications for Lake Regional’s 2022 Junior Volunteer Program must include a paragraph about why the student would like to volunteer, along with a copy of their school vaccinations record and a medical release signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The deadline to submit completed applications to the Lake Regional Auxiliary office is noon Friday, May 20. Documents received after the deadline will not be considered. Orientation will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Lake Regional Hospital in the third floor conference rooms.
