Lake Regional Health System is pleased to announce the promotion of four employees to department directors.
Three of the four promotions result from a reorganization of the leadership of Lake Regional Medical Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lake Regional Health System that operates seven primary care clinics, 19 specialty care clinics, three walk-in care clinics and four retail pharmacies in the lake area.
"We are pleased to have John Appleby, Valerie McCann and Travis Messer now in director roles," said Michael Burcham, vice president of Physician Practices for Lake Regional Health System. "Each of them is a proven leader, with skills and experience that will help us continue to grow and provide care to our community."
John Appleby has been named director of Lake Regional Medical Group Specialty Clinics – Surgery Division. His areas of oversight include Lake Regional's bone and joint program, Lake Regional Urology, Lake Regional General Surgery, and Lake Regional ENT & Audiology. Appleby joined Lake Regional in 2015 as the practice administrator for General Surgery and ENT. He has a Master of Business Administration and previously managed a family practice in Shawnee Mission, Kan., and then worked as a systems director at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo.
Valerie McCann has been named director of Lake Regional Physician Group – Primary Care Division. Her areas of oversight include all seven Lake Regional primary care clinics, all three Lake Regional Express Care clinics, Lake Regional Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Lake Regional call center. McCann has worked at Lake Regional Health System since 2014. She has a bachelor's in health care administration and is a certified medical practice executive with the Medical Group Management Association. She has more than 25 years of health care management experience.
Travis Messer has been named director of Lake Regional Medical Group Specialty Clinics – Medicine Division. His areas of oversight include Lake Regional Sleep Medicine, Lake Regional Neurology, Lake Regional Pulmonology, Lake Regional's hospitalist program and Lake Regional's cardiac program. Messer began working at Lake Regional as an intern in the summer of 2007. After completing his Master of Health Administration, he joined Lake Regional full-time as the practice administrator for the system's clinics related to cardiac care, including three cardiology practices, cardiovascular-thoracic surgery and nephrology.
The fourth promotion results from the creation of a new Learning and Development Department for Lake Regional Health System. Previously, separate departments oversaw education for Lake Regional Medical Group staff and education for hospital staff. The new department brings together all staff education efforts. Jill Mergelkamp has been named the Learning and Development Department director.
"We are excited to have Jill leading this new department," said Tom Williams, vice president of Employee and Community Development for Lake Regional Health System. "Ongoing education for our staff is essential for us to provide exceptional health care."
In addition to leading staff education for both Lake Regional Hospital and Lake Regional clinics, Mergelkamp also will maintain management of Lake Regional Medical Group's float pool of nurses and receptionists. Mergelkamp has been with Lake Regional Human Resources department since 2007. Born and raised in Eldon, she moved back to the area in 2006 from Georgia, where she worked for an independent physicians group as director of Human Resources. Previously, she had a career in accounting and reached the level of controller before transitioning into health care.
Lake Regional Health System provides comprehensive health care services to the residents and visitors of the lake region. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and is a three-time recipient of the Missouri Quality Award. Lake Regional Health System also operates primary care, walk-in care, specialty care and rehab therapy clinics; retail pharmacies; and home health services throughout the lake area.
