Respiratory Care

Lake Regional offers diagnosis and treatment options for individuals who have lung disease or respiratory conditions, such as COPD, asthma, bronchitis or emphysema.

Pulmonary Function Testing

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure how well the lungs are moving air in and out. By assessing lung capacity, volumes and rates of flow, PFTs provide information that helps your physician diagnose certain lung disorders. During the test, specially trained staff will instruct you to breathe in different patterns through multiple tubes while you are seated. If necessary, staff may administer medications to widen your airway. Pulmonary function tests require a physician’s order. They are conducted in the Respiratory Therapy department on the second floor of Lake Regional Hospital. For information, call 573-302-2233.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Lake Regional offers Phase II Pulmonary Rehab, an individualized exercise program for patients who have lung disease. It is designed to increase strength, endurance and confidence. Exercise sessions are 60 minutes to 90 minutes, two to three days a week depending on the clinic location.

Weekly pulmonary education classes focus on breathing techniques, energy conservation, medications and oxygen use.

Pulmonary rehab is offered at Lake Regional Hospital and Lake Regional clinic locations in Laurie and Eldon.

A referral from a primary care physician or pulmonologist is required to begin pulmonary rehabilitation.
