Single-Incision Surgery

Thanks to changing technology and an investment recently made by Lake Regional Health System in the latest equipment, many of the hospital’s patients now may be candidates for a newer, minimally invasive surgical technique called single-incision surgery.

As the name implies, SIS involves just one incision made at the patient’s belly button. The incision is typically about the size of a quarter or smaller.

Scott Brick, D.O., the board-certified general surgeon who performs SIS at Lake Regional, says technological advances, including the flexible-tip laparoscope, are making the surgery more widely available for more patients. Watch the video.

The main advantage to SIS is its cosmetic appeal.  Other advantages to SIS include quicker wound healing, less pain, less chance for infection and a quicker recovery.

SIS is best suited to normal weight patients who may be having non-emergent surgery for conditions, such as:

  • Gallbladder removal
  • Appendix removal
  • Colon surgery, including diverticular disease
  • Hernia repair
  • Gastric surgery
