Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure how well the lungs are moving air in and out. By assessing lung capacity, volumes and rates of flow, PFTs provide information that helps your physician diagnose certain lung disorders, including asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.
During the test, specially trained staff will instruct you to breathe in different patterns through multiple tubes while you are seated. If necessary, staff may administer medications to widen your airway.
Pulmonary function tests require a physician’s order. They are conducted in the Respiratory Therapy department on the second floor of Lake Regional Hospital.
