The first phase of cardiac rehabilitation begins while the patient is hospitalized. An educator visits the patient in their room to discuss changes to their medication and diet, as well as the need to increase or modify their exercise routines. The educator also assists them with enrolling in the nearest cardiac rehabilitation program available.
If your physician prescribes cardiac rehabilitation, our staff will examine your medical history thoroughly to minimize or eliminate potential problems. The cardiac rehabilitation staff then will contact you to schedule an exercise consultation at the main hospital campus in Osage Beach.
Exercise consults consist of two parts. The first part is a question and answer session. The staff member will describe cardiac rehabilitation and answer your questions about medications or procedures. You'll also learn about the mental and physical benefits of exercise.
During the second part of the consultation, the staff member will use Lake Regional's state-of-the-art monitoring system to determine how your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels respond while you exercise. The results from the exercise consultation will help staff establish your target heart rate, as well as the intensity, duration and best type of exercise for you, such as the treadmill or stationary bike.
Next, you will be assigned to a class that meets the same time every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Class sizes are limited.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation staff will help you set up your monitoring devices and equipment. The number of weeks you stay in the program typically depends on your insurance coverage, physician's orders and compliance. Most patients participate in cardiac rehabilitation three times each week for 12 weeks — a total of 36 sessions.
Dietary issues also will be addressed during the phase II program. The medical nutrition therapy component that accompanies the exercise regimen includes advice on developing overall healthy eating habits, emphasizing consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; limiting the intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol; and maintaining or attaining a healthy body weight.
In addition, you will receive classroom information on the heart's anatomy, cardiac risk factors, medications, controlling blood pressure, limiting sodium intake and reading food labels.
Lake Regional's phase III cardiac rehabilitation and maintenance program offers individualized exercise prescriptions designed by the program's staff.
If you have graduated from phase II cardiac rehabilitation or want to lose weight, control blood pressure, stop smoking, increase energy and increase strength, ask your physician for a referral to our phase III cardiac rehabilitation program.
Enrolling in a phase III program gives you access to trained professionals, including nurses and exercise physiologists, who are highly qualified to monitor your health status and update your exercise prescription on a regular basis. Access to a dietitian for dietary counseling and support also is included.
