Seasonal Information

Lake Regional Pharmacy is your local resource for health information year-round. Check out the following helpful tips from Lake Regional Pharmacist Kristen Eblen.

Tips for Traveling With Medications

  • When flying, always pack your prescriptions in your carry-on so they will be with you at all times, even if your checked luggage is late or lost. Liquids and creams with valid prescription labels are permitted on carry-on luggage.

  • Keep all prescriptions in pharmacy-labeled containers which list your name, your doctor's name, the name of the drug, the prescription number and your pharmacy's contact informations.

  • If you need a refill while you are out of town, ask your insurance company if they allow a vacation override. If so, your hometown pharmacy can dispense enough medication before you leave to last until you return. If not, take your containers or written prescriptions with you so they can be filled by a pharmacist at your destination. Pharmacies can transfer most prescriptions from state to state, as long as valid refills are on file and both pharmacies are open.

Seasonal Allergies — Which Medication Is Right for You?

According to Eblen, the most common medications used to treat allergies are antihistamines, decongestants or a combination of the two.

Antihistamines help relieve rashes, hives, sneezing, itching and a runny nose. Decongestant pills, sprays and nose drops reduce stuffiness by shrinking swollen membranes in the nose. Use single-ingredient products so you can treat only the symptoms you are experiencing.

Eblen advises customers to keep diphenhydramine, loratadine or cetirizine and pseudoephedrine handy to treat most allergy symptoms. Although a generic is not yet available, she says Allegra is helpful for treating sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes.
